Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of DRDO-developed technologies of all conventional missile systems to the Indian defence industry for production within the country, in a major push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The Defence Ministry said the move will enable Indian companies to undertake indigenous production of these missile systems, subject to applicable qualifications, certifications and regulatory requirements.

The initiative is aimed at facilitating the transition of missile systems from the development stage to industrial-scale production, while giving a greater role to domestic companies, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and other technology partners in the defence supply chain.

“This Transfer of Technology marks an important milestone in promoting greater participation of the domestic industries in the defence ecosystem," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the move will help enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and strengthen India’s defence industrial base. It is also expected to create opportunities for Indian MSMEs and other technology partners to participate in the production and supply of advanced defence systems.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing operational capability, reducing import dependence and increasing indigenous content and domestic value addition in missile production.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will work closely with Indian industry to facilitate the transfer and absorption of the technologies, the ministry said.

The move is part of the government’s broader push to leverage domestic industrial capabilities for the development and manufacture of advanced defence systems and strengthen India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The transfer of DRDO missile technology to Indian defence firms will boost India's defence self-reliance by enabling domestic companies to produce these missile systems within the country. This move is expected to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and strengthen India's defence industrial base.

The technology transfer includes all conventional missile systems developed by the DRDO. This covers short-range systems like Astra, medium-range systems such as Pralay, and various long-range conventional missiles.

The policy could create jobs in the defence sector by bringing hundreds of domestic micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into the supply chains of major private defence firms.
